ABOUT Economic Justice
Much of the world’s poverty and injustice stem from structural inequalities within and among nations. These imbalances of wealth and power are sustained by international legal and financial systems that benefit a select few, undermine democracy and harm vulnerable communities. Corporations often evade paying taxes to the countries where their wealth is generated, siphoning billions of dollars into tax havens. International treaties and laws often enable corporate exploitation, displacing marginalized groups and weakening local economies.
OUR WORK ON ECONOMIC JUSTICE
Inter Pares collaborates in national and global networks to promote a just economic system—one that values human dignity, social trust and collaboration, and where everyone can thrive. We work to restore community control over the resources that they steward and depend on. We also support communities that have been devastated by or displaced due to corporate activity on their lands.
In Canada, we advocate for legal reform requiring Canadian corporations to respect human rights in their operations outside Canada and be held accountable for violations. We tackle the use of tax havens and tax loopholes to ensure countries receive the revenue they are rightfully owed. Alongside our counterparts, we assist communities to protect sensitive ecosystems from mining, advocate for laws that prioritize people and the environment and promote climate solutions rooted in justice and human rights.
