ABOUT FOOD AND CLIMATE JUSTICE
Corporations are increasing their control over the world’s food systems—eroding crop diversity, and pushing patented seeds, often poorly suited to local climates, soils or water availability. These seeds require expensive synthetic fertilizers and pesticides that degrade land and soil, jeopardizing food security and intensifying environmental harm. In pursuit of fertile land, corporations also push small-scale farmers, especially in the Global South, onto marginal lands. This dynamic enriches corporations while impoverishing farmers.
The climate crisis disproportionately affects vulnerable communities, particularly those whose livelihoods depend on the land. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is necessary but insufficient. Governments frequently remain inactive, while corporations continue to promote capitalist interests over sustainability.
OUR WORK ON fOOD AND CLIMATE JUSTICE
We work with counterparts to improve access to healthy, sustainable food while protecting our planet. Together, we empower communities to govern their own food systems. We advocate for diverse agricultural practices and local decision-making to build a food system that is both fair and environmentally sustainable. This is food sovereignty and it challenges the agro-industrial model and neoliberal economic policies, which exacerbate environmental degradation and social inequities.
Inter Pares collaborates with farmers’ movements worldwide, including women farmers, providing training, resources and opportunities for knowledge-sharing. In Canada, we also work in coalition to advocate for policies that support family farms and promote agroecology.
