ABOUT HEALTH

Health and access to health-care services depend on factors beyond medical care, such as poverty, inequality and gender. These social conditions—often called the “social determinants of health”—create a web of influences affecting individual and community well-being. When health care is treated as a commodity and access depends on the ability to pay, the most marginalized members of communities are denied essential services.

Public health-care systems are in crisis worldwide. The increasing privatization of health care prioritizes profit over people’s well-being, exacerbating health disparities and restricting access for those most in need. Additionally, religious and patriarchal norms often hinder access to education and services for sexual and reproductive health, while conflict and war disrupt services and destroy critical health infrastructure.

OUR WORK ON HEALTH

Inter Pares and our counterparts understand that health is central to social justice in Canada and abroad and that health care is a collective right and responsibility. We collaborate with counterparts to advocate for inclusive, publicly funded health-care systems that are culturally appropriate and accessible to all. In regions where access is limited due to conflict or governmental neglect, we help fund health services. Our counterparts also conduct research, engage the public and mobilize communities to demand their right to health.

As a feminist and pro-choice organization, we emphasize the importance of gender equality and sexual and reproductive rights. We are committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to lead healthy lives, free from discrimination and barriers to care.
