ABOUT PEACE AND DEMOCRACY
Over the past decade, conflicts around the world have steadily increased. In times of heightened instability, polarization, authoritarianism and repression by state or military governments, people’s movements become the catalysts for change. These movements respond to crises, seize opportunities and demand inclusion in peacebuilding, post-conflict and democratization processes. At the same time, they work to envision and build alternative models of development. Their ultimate goal is to re-establish accountable and democratic governance systems that protect and benefit everyone.
OUR WORK ON PEACE AND DEMOCRACY
We collaborate with counterparts worldwide over the long term as they strive to create sustainable peace. From supporting women and youth peacebuilders in Sudan as they face threats to their lives and livelihoods during wartime, to bolstering Indigenous counterparts in Burma working toward federal democracy, to amplifying marginalized voices heard in Colombia’s transitional justice processes, we stand in solidarity with those affected by conflicts. Our counterparts document human rights violations, provide humanitarian aid and strengthen people’s movements for accountable and democratic governance. In Canada, we connect people in solidarity with our counterparts, advocate for civil liberties and raise awareness about the crises affecting those we support.
