CONTEXT

Climate change threatens the livelihoods of rural populations in Senegal who depend on fishing and farming.

Recurrent droughts, limited access to land, and once-fertile soil degraded by decades of unsustainable agriculture force many people to move to urban areas or to other countries to find work. Rural women and youth play a crucial role in natural resource management and climate change adaptation in Senegal, yet their participation in decision-making is limited. Men traditionally dominate decision-making spaces while social and patriarchal norms restrict women and youth to domestic and caregiving tasks.

Despite political uncertainty and laws that silence dissent, social movements in Senegal persist.

Social movements work to transform local food systems and empower local communities to respond to the risks of climate change. Grassroots groups—like our counterpart Enda Pronat—are at the forefront of agroecology and climate justice.

OUR WORK IN SENEGAL

We collaborate with Enda Pronat in Senegal to promote climate resilience and sustainable rural development.

We do this through agroecology—producing healthy, culturally appropriate food in Earth-friendly ways. Enda Pronat supports local communities, especially women and youth, to be involved in decision-making spaces, gaining and maintaining control over their lands and resources and using these sustainably for future generations. Together, we promote gender equality while preserving biodiversity, restoring ecosystems and building climate resilience.

Inter Pares acknowledges Global Affairs Canada for its financial support for our work with counterparts in Senegal.
