Established in 2004, Asociación de Organizaciones del Ixcán (ROMI) is a women-led grassroots network comprising of hundred’s of women’s committees from across the seven micro-regions that make up the municipality of Ixcán, in the department of Quiché, Guatemala.
Many members of ROMI were active in the resistance during the war and served as community leaders during the peace negotiations and the return of refugees at the end of the conflict.
Given Ixcán’s relative isolation from the rest of the country, ROMI prioritizes municipal initiatives and advocacy to promote women’s political participation and highlight their leadership in territorial defense. ROMI is also the region’s main point of reference for accompanying survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and eliminating barriers to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
